The European Union has mandated that Google expand access to its Android platform and search services as part of new regulations aimed at boosting competition within the digital marketplace. Under these directives, Google must open up 11 Android features to rival artificial intelligence developers. This move is intended to allow competing AI assistants to utilize essential device functions and respond to voice commands in a manner akin to Google’s own Gemini assistant. These adjustments are projected to be available to users with an Android update expected in July 2027.
In addition to these platform changes, the new regulations stipulate that Google must share specific anonymized search data with AI companies and competitive search entities. This initiative is designed to help these companies enhance their own search-based offerings. Google will retain the ability to evaluate whether companies requesting access comply with cybersecurity and data protection standards before data is shared. This data-sharing requirement is set to be implemented in January of the coming year.
The European Commission emphasized that these measures are crafted to bolster user privacy and device security while simultaneously fostering increased competition in the realms of AI and online search. The initiative is part of the broader European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which seeks to limit the dominance of major tech firms and offer consumers more diverse options in digital services.
