Tech Innovation Drives Seoul Stocks Up 1.65% with Semiconductor Surge

The sharp rise in South Korean semiconductor stocks on Monday provided significant relief to investors concerned about the impact of ongoing Middle East tensions and high oil prices. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 113.49 points, or 1.65%, closing at 7,007.72, marking its third consecutive session of gains.

Market optimism was largely driven by interest in artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related shares. Samsung Electronics saw a robust increase of 4.98%, reaching 274,000 won, while SK hynix experienced a modest gain of 0.59%, closing at 1.87 million won. SK Square, which is the parent company of SK hynix, also enjoyed a significant rise of 4.45%.

However, the broader market displayed mixed results. Hyundai Motor’s shares fell by 1.64%, and LG Energy Solution’s stock decreased by 3.3%, indicating that not all sectors shared in the semiconductor-driven rally.

Adding to the positive sentiment in the financial markets, the Korean won strengthened against the US dollar, ending the day at 1,381 won per dollar, an improvement of 4.5 won from the previous session. This currency appreciation reflects a bolstered investor confidence in the country’s economic resilience amid global uncertainties.
