WhatsApp has taken a significant step in expanding its digital payment offerings by launching a new feature that enables users to pay utility bills directly through its messaging app. This development allows users to handle everyday transactions such as paying for electricity, gas, water, and more, without the need to switch to different applications.
The service, which operates on the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, supports over 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. These categories include essential services like electricity, gas, water, FASTag, and insurance, as well as credit card and loan repayments. With this integration, WhatsApp aims to streamline the process of managing household bills, making it more convenient for its users.
Users can easily access the bill payment feature from the WhatsApp home screen by selecting their desired bill category and provider. After entering their account details, they can review the bill amount before proceeding with the payment. The platform offers various payment methods, including UPI, debit cards, and credit cards, to facilitate a smooth transaction experience.
In addition to making payments, WhatsApp’s new feature allows users to view their previous transactions, keep track of upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts with the same service provider. This expansion marks a strategic move for WhatsApp as it positions itself as a comprehensive digital-services platform, enabling users to perform daily tasks efficiently within the app.
This initiative underscores the growing trend of integrating messaging platforms with digital financial services. By incorporating such functionalities, technology companies are making it easier for users to conduct payments and manage routine transactions, enhancing the accessibility and convenience of their ecosystems.
